Topic Background :

Today COVID-19 affects every aspect of business. A good example is the two new leave obligations for employers under The Families First Coronavirus Response Act FFCRA - The Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act (EPSLA) and The Emergency Family and Medical Leave Expansion Act (EFMLEA.)

In March, the Federal govt. as part of The Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) passed two new leave laws affording protections to employees affected by COVID-19. It was a tremendous response to the pandemic.

Why should you attend :

The new leaves are administered by the Department of Labor and the good news is payment of the leaves is returned to employers through tax credits. But its all still a bit murky and some guidance has been changing on what seems a fairly regular basis.

The dilemma is when new employment laws are passed, they generally are accompanied by a measured rollout offering detailed guidance from their assigned regulatory agencies. These two new leave obligations came with little guidance. While the rapid rollout was for the best of reasons, its passage came with little guidance, and the clock on the grace period for non-compliance of employers started ticking before employees could even take the leave. That’s bad news because a new law’s administration and details are often solved through regulatory agency enforcement, even litigation and who needs those problems in the midst of a business crushing pandemic.

It’s hard to keep up with COVID-19. It’s even harder when you’re a one stop HR office and everyone expects HR to have instant answers.
